Justin tops them all
CHRIST CHURCH Foundation School student Justin Seale has done Barbados proud.
He emerged as this year's winner of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO)/Travel and Leisure Tourism Youth Congress which concluded the 28th annual Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC-28) held in the United States Virgin Islands last week.
He won from a field of 17 students from across the region.
The student won a personal prize of US$500 in cash, and US$1 000 for his school.
Jerome Brooks of St Maarten was second and Joanne Marshall of St Vincent and the Grenadines was third.
Brooks won US$300, while Marshall and Phipps each got US$200. The first three places also received laptop computers from Naismith International Basketball Foundation and Air Jamaica.
Vondez Phipps of St Kitts and Nevis received an honorary mention.
Students, who ranged from ages 14 to 17, represented their respective countries as "Junior Ministers of Tourism" at the Fifth Annual Youth Congress, sponsored by Travel and Leisure, with support from the Naismith Basketball Foundation and Air Jamaica.
"Before this (the Youth Congress) I was not inclined to tourism, but now I'm a bit more inclined to work in the tourism industry," said Seale, who spent the summer vacation preparing for the event.
During the 90-minute event, the students were challenged to discuss Promoting Responsible Tourism In The Caribbean - Trying To Give Something Back To The Country Being Visited.
They also debated a "mystery question" which sought their suggestions on what measures should be recommended to ensure safety and security of visitors.
The congress, which simulated a CTO board of directors meeting, was chaired by last year's winner, Lemisse Gittens of St Eustatius.

The student won this year's Caribbean Tourism Organisation's (CTO) Speak-Off Competition last week in the United States Virgin Islands, from a field of 17 participants.
He received his award yesterday from Minister of Tourism and International Transport Noel Lynch and president of the Barbados Tourism Authority, Stuart Layne.
Speaking before a packed school hall, Lynch said that in winning the competition, Seale gave the lie to the argument that Barbadian men were in crisis.
He said Seale spoke with "confidence, knowledge and articulation".
Stressing that tourism remained this region's major foreign exchange earner, Lynch said it must continue to attract "the smartest and the best" from the island's schools.
Seale became the first Barbadian student to win the competition since it was introduced in 2000.
He was one of four male students from across the region to participate in this year's contest.
Lynch presented Seale with a cheque for US$500, a lap-top computer from the CTO, and an additional US$500 from the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport.
The school received a cheque for US$1000 from the CTO, while on behalf of the BTA, Layne presented Seale with two tickets for a trip to Grenada and reservations for lunch or dinner at Champers Restaurant and Wine Bar, Hastings, Christ Church.
Simone Dottin completed her Masters degree in Biomedical Science at Kingston University in Surrey, England.
She is a graduate of the University of the West Indies and holds a Bachelors with double majors in Biology and Chemistry. Her early education was at the Christ Church Foundation School, and the Barbados Community College where she earned an Associate Degree.
The event was considered the ultimate showdown of the competition, which ran from October 27 to November 1.
It was won by five-time world sprint champion Arnaud Tournant of France.
Forde outclassed the likes of 2005 world champion Teun Mulder of the Netherlands and Rene Wolff of Germany to take the coveted second place.
Forde, Barbados' best rider, has been gaining legions of fans in Europe this season competing on the six-days circuit.
He has also attracted the attention of other top-class cyclists who are counting him among the formidable competitors expected at the Commonwealth Games slated for March 15 to 26, 2006, in Melbourne, Australia.
In an interview this week with Cyclingnews, 2004 Olympic gold medallist Ryan Bayley of Australia said his team was looking in comfortable form for the Commonwealth Games, but he expects the competition to be stiff from the British and Scottish teams "and people like Barry Forde".
"If you give him an inch he'll take a mile. He's an unbelievable rider and he's always nipping at our heels," he added.
"In the last few months we've seen him ride and he's done some unbelievable things – he's been really fast."
Forde will next compete in the Six Days Of Munich meeting in Germany this weekend.
