Ryan Austin was born in Trinidad on November 15, 1981. At the age of nine, his family migrated to Barbados where he attended the Holy Innocents Primary School. He later transferred to Bayley's Primary and then on to Foundation School.

Already a promising cricketer, he soon became a member of the school's Under 15 team as an all rounder- bowling his off spin and batting in the top half of the order. He appeared in two BET Under 15 Finals during that period.

His outings for the school Senior XI were restricted due to his being added to the Combined Schools South team at an early age. The first West Indies Under 15 tournament saw Foundation providing 5 members on the Barbados team, of which Ryan was one. He also played the following year when Barbados won all of their games convincingly in St. Lucia.

He eventually played for the Barbados Under 19 team (1999-2000), and also gained selection on the West Indies Under 19 team which toured England in 2001.

He was called upon once more to play for the Barbados Senior team in the 2001 Busta Cup Competition and recently concluded the 2002 season with two five-wicket hauls and a half-century. He appeared in five matches in all, taking 16 wickets at 25.75 each.

He will be joining other leading junior West Indies players in Grenada to attend the Cricket Academy to further his cricketing education.
