At Foundation, students are prepared for the Secondary Examinations of the Caribbean Examinations Council (C.X.C.), and also for the Cambridge General Certificate of Examinations (G.C.E.) O Level examination in those subjects not yet being offered by C.X.C.
The curriculum includes English, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Social Studies, French, Spanish, Mathematics, Information Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Integrated Science, Metal Work, Woodwork, Technical Drawing, Electricity and Electronics, Industrial Arts, Music, Art, Principles of Business, Principles of Accounts, Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Typewriting and Physical Education.
Text books are provided by Government for an annual rental fee of $75.00 per student, and each student is provided with his/her own stationery which is obtainable from the school's book room. Petty fees of $15.00 per term or $45.00 per year are to be paid by each student within the first 4 weeks of each term.
Each pupil is required to have the following items; *1 drawing book, 1 set of crayons, 1 pen, 1 HB pencil, 1 H pencil, 1 eraser, 1 rule, *1 set of paints, 1 geometrical set, *1 set of exercise books, 1 dictionary (by name), 1 Atlas (by name), 1 songs of praise, 1 Bible (Revised Standard version), 1 logarithmic tables (3rd, 4th and 5th form), 1 scientific calculator (3rd, 4th and 5th forms).
The age limit at present is 18, however, most students leave at the end of the fifth year after they have completed their C.X.C. Examinations. They then go on to further academic studies (A Levels) at schools with 6th forms, attend the Barbados Community College, undertake vocational studies at other organizations, or enter the employment market.
Extra curricular activities
These include Cricket, Football, Athletics, Hockey, Swimming, Basketball, Volleyball, Netball, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Cadets, Karate and Gymnastics. There is also Foreign Language, Drama, Literary and Debating clubs/societies in which the level of student participation varies each year. The school is also a member of the Interschool Christian Fellowship (I.S.C.F.), and the Rotary Club of Barbados sponsored Social Services Club called the Interact Club. During the year 2000 a new club was formed called Club Foundation. There is also a fully functional Old Scholars Association and PTA. The complete list along with contact names can be found here.
The school operates on a 7 or 8 period day, beginning at 8:35 am and ending at 2:40 pm. The school year is from September to July and consist of three terms. The first, Michaelmas is 14 weeks, the second, Hilary is 12 weeks, and the third, Trinity is 12 weeks. These terms are separated by holiday periods of 3 weeks (Christmas), 3 weeks (Easter), and 8 weeks (Summer), or as determined by the Ministry of Education.
