LED BY A THIRD successive 30-point performance from Darren Hunte, pre-season favourites The St Michael School continued their romp through the United Insurance Senior Basketball Division 2 Tournament when the competition resumed on Wednesday.
The prolific Station Hill Cavaliers forward poured in a game high 32 points on the road as the former champs whipped Christ Church Foundation 106-37 to maintain their unbeaten start to the competition.
Starting point-guard Raheem Elliot chipped in with 18 points, while backcourt mate Shakeir Bayne added 12 for St Michael (3-0).
Zachary Gooding and Dwight Fenty were the Foundation players to reach double digits, scoring 11 and ten points, respectively.
Fellow title contenders Garrison Secondary and Lester Vaughan have also posted similar 3-0 records to keep pace with the league leaders.
Behind the dynamic trio of John Jones (22), Justin Maloney (21) and Jodi Williams (21), Garrison routed Alleyne 82-50 at home, while Lester Vaughan pounded St James Secondary 67-9, behind the efforts of Kevin Mallett (18) and Ashley Smith (15).
The tournament resumes today with games islandwide.
Foundation School recorded two big wins to open the 2008 Secondary Schools Under-19 Netball Competition earlier this week.
The runners-up in last year's competition hammered St George Secondary 34-7 and beat Lester Vaughan School 30-15 in the first two rounds of competition.
National Under-16 selectee Reiah Holder has been leading the way for Foundation School with some very accurate shooting. She scored 27 goals from 32 attempts against St George, and 22 from 25 against Lester Vaughan.
Crystal Codrington has been giving good support, scoring five from seven against St George, and seven from nine against Lester Vaughan.
Asheba Martial and Nikita Harewood shared the scoring for St George.
For Lester Vaughan, Keyla King scored six from 11 and Crystal Brathwaite two from three. Tonisha Rock-Yaw, another national Under-16 trialist, scored nine goals from ten attempts after being switched from the goal defence position.
Meanwhile, defending champions Springer Memorial also made a successful start to the competition, drubbing Princess Margaret 37-6. Shamika Clarke scored 20 goals from 25 attempts and Shakera Browne one from three.
With a comfortable 21-5 half-time lead, Springer coach Julie Phillips had the luxury of changing both shooters. Kayann Eastmond scored eight from 11 and Derise Adams eight from 14 to complete the rout.
Deandre Jordan scored four from seven and Sharina Butcher two from five for Princess Margaret.
In other matches, Garrison Secondary also opened with two victories, beating Ellerslie 36-21 and Alleyne School 27-13. Coleridge and Parry beat Parkinson Memorial 13-11 but Parkinson hammered Princess Margaret 35-3. Ellerslie and The Lodge School played to a 19-19 draw.
Combermere and Deighton Griffith have withdrawn from the competition, while the rain has affected other matches. (SAT)
6th form for Foundation
by Tracy Moore
THE CHRIST CHURCH FOUNDATION SCHOOL will be joining the select few by September 2009 when the Ministry of Education introduces a long called for sixth form at the school.
Minister of Education Ronald Jones made the announcement to students and staff Wednesday at the morning assembly held to launch the school's 200th anniversary. In addition, without naming them, he said his ministry would also look at one or two more schools to provide more sixth form education, which would also create more capacity for the number of students moving towards that level of learning.
"There are a few things that we have to do with Foundation and I will tell you this morning . . . that we will be returning, with the support of my colleagues in the Cabinet of Barbados, Foundation to a sixth form school.
"I'm looking at the start of the term 2009. I am not looking beyond that [to introduce the 6th form]. I think that would be the best gift that myself as Minister, the Ministry of Education and the Government of Barbados can give to Christ Church Foundation School on its 200th anniversary," he said.
There are only four public secondary schools with existing sixth forms in Barbados. They are Combermere School, The Lodge School, Harrison College and Queen's College.
Jones said many well qualified students leaving 5th form schools, sometimes struggled to get into existing sixth-form schools.
"Only yesterday (Monday) I sat with sixth form principals and officials of the Ministry as we tried to see how can get some of those sixth form schools to take a little more but they are already bursting at their seams.
"Therefore it would make sense that if there is a high demand for more secondary education beyond the Barbados Community College (BCC), the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP), and the four sixth form schools, to look at institutions which have had a tradition of sixth form education and give them an opportunity," he said.
With Foundation's school roll already packed with more than 900 students, Jones said his ministry would work with the school's board to ensure capacity is developed by 2009 to accept both students transferring from other schools as well as those continuing from within Foundation.
